I met one of my ex-colleagues this weekend. He used to work with me in Xplore Tech, my
present workplace. He looked a little weary.
When I asked about his health, he said he is alright; it’s just a little
work pressure that has bogged him down.
So I asked him to lighten up, or it’s Diwali after all. He smiled and
said he is working this weekend to finish the work assigned to him.
I was a little worried by then; he did seem a little grey.
So I said, 'are there no colleagues who can help you finish the work by
Monday?' He gave me a sad smile and said, people here are more professional.
The perks and pays may be higher here, but the company lacks a work culture.
Then he added, “Seriously man, there’s no place like Xplore Tech! You’re lucky
you are still there!”
This one incident made me realize the truth about BPO jobs
in Kolkata. There are plenty of opportunities in BPOs, you can switch job any
time and get bigger paychecks, better perks.
But it is the human interaction and work culture that truly satisfies
you.
Work culture and helping attitude are not something that is
encouraged in BPOs these days. One of my friends told me what their trainer
said to them – you, your comp and your headset makes you a unit. This is your
world while you are in office unless otherwise told. – Now tell me, where is the scope of human
interaction in this statement?
In Xplore Tech however, work culture, human interaction and
helping each other is always encouraged. Here we believe in teamwork, backing
each other up when the occasion calls for it. If someone’s ill, any of his
colleagues willingly fill in his place. If someone needs study leaves, it’s
given to them by combining with their week offs so that they do not suffer from
a major pay cut. If someone is not capable of performing up to the optimum
level, the company gives him time and options that he can shift to another
process. Very few BPO companies do that these days.
